AAC Programming

AAC programming may be required to ensure that your child’s device contains important, well-organized vocabulary for them to communicate their wants and needs. Your therapist will inform you if they identify any AAC programming needs. The complexity of programming can vary based on each child’s specific needs, such as visual accommodations or the addition of personally relevant vocabulary. Therapists will integrate AAC programming into treatment sessions at no additional cost and also train parents to program the devices to support effective carryover of the device at home.

FAQ

Will my child’s AAC device require programming?

For new or non-customized AAC devices, programming may be needed to tailor them to a child's specific needs. Therapists will recommend personalized programming when they determine that changes are necessary to optimize communication effectiveness and success.

How long will programming take?

The programming duration for your child’s AAC device varies with complexity, usually taking 2-4 sessions of 15-30 minutes each. Your therapist will give an estimate based on your child's specific needs.

Can my therapist program outside of therapy sessions instead?

Programming is a skilled therapeutic service integrated into sessions. If you wish to support this process, your therapist can guide you on how to program the necessary adjustments between sessions, allowing more time for direct therapy.

Can I decline programming?

If a therapist recommends programming, they've identified necessary changes that will maximize therapy outcomes. Without programming, the device may not fully support your child's communication goals. Your therapist will collaborate with you to decide what's best for your child's progress.
