What is Early Intervention Physical Therapy?

Early intervention pediatric physical therapy sessions will focus on supporting babies and young children who may be experiencing developmental delays, movement difficulties, or conditions such as cerebral palsy, torticollis, or hypotonia. The goal is to promote optimal motor development, independence, and participation in daily activities.

The Initial Physical Therapy Evaluation

In an initial evaluation, the physical therapist will begin by observing how the child moves, plays, and interacts with their environment, as well as assessing posture, muscle tone, joint mobility, balance, coordination, and gross motor skills like sitting, crawling, standing, or walking.

What to Expect in Ongoing Physical Therapy Sessions

In the following sessions, the physical therapist will design fun, age-appropriate activities to help the child develop strength, endurance, and motor control. Infants will be guided to develop head and trunk control in various positions, progressing towards other important motor milestones, such as independent sitting and crawling. For older toddlers, a session may instead be focused on upright skills such as pulling to stand, cruising, and early stepping.

Family Involvement and At-Home Support

Caregivers will be encouraged to be actively involved throughout, learning how to support their child’s progress through home exercises and daily routines. Parents will always be taught how to safely continue these exercises at home and integrate them into daily routines. For infants, techniques taught may involve handling strategies, tummy time variations, or positioning tips for parents.

A Personalized Approach for Every Child

Every session will be tailored to the child’s specific needs and goals, making early intervention both effective and empowering for the child and their family. If you have any questions about your child’s development or would like to have your child assessed, please talk to our team and book an appointment today!
