What is a Sleep System?

An important part of our work as therapists is addressing your child’s 24-hour postural management, and part of that is helping families understand how sleep can support their child’s health and development. If your child has difficulty moving, maintaining posture, or staying comfortable at night, a sleep system can make a big difference.

We know that a sleep system can often seem daunting, and changing your child’s sleep habits or environment can feel overwhelming, especially if getting to sleep or staying asleep isn’t currently an issue. A sleep system doesn’t have to be a huge change all at once, it is simply a combination of positioning supports generally used in their own bed to help children maintain safe, supported postures throughout the night.

Sleep System Options

Sleep systems are certainly not one-size-fits-all, and there is a wide range of different levels of support, ranging from minimal support to more structured systems that can support their entire posture overnight. This might include:

  • Positioning aids: wedges, bolsters, lateral supports, rolls or blocks for legs, hips, back or head position
  • Adjustable beds or mattresses
  • Enclosed or protected sleeping environments
  • Pressure-relieving cushions or surfaces

Who Can Benefit From a Sleep System?

Sleep systems are designed to support children who have limited movement, high or low muscle tone, or need help staying in a good position overnight. It is important to realise that sleep systems can be introduced gradually; it doesn’t have to be a radical overnight change, and often it’s best if done over a longer period to maintain the child’s sleep routine.

Why Are Sleep Systems So Important?

Sleep Is Therapy! Sleep isn’t just about rest — it’s a powerful tool for healing and growth. For children with additional needs, sleep systems can provide not only comfort but long-term physical and emotional benefits. Sleep is essential for a child’s growth (it is where most of it is done!). Sleep systems, therefore, should be viewed as an integral tool in holistic pediatric care. If a child sleeps in a poor position over time, it can lead to long-term issues such as:

  • Reduced joint range of movement – joint stiffness or contractures
  • Hip subluxation and windswept deformity
  • Scoliosis
  • Skin breakdown or pressure sores

A personalised sleep system helps protect growing bodies and can prevent or reduce the risk of these problems. Sleep systems CAN also help your child to sleep better!

Benefits of Sleep Systems for Children and Caregivers

Children with physical challenges often find it difficult to relax or stay in a comfortable position at night. A sleep system can:

  • Reduce discomfort and pain
  • Prevent unsafe sleeping positions
  • Create a secure and familiar calming sleep environment (lots of sleep systems are mobile, so your child has that support and consistency wherever they are)

This often leads to fewer night-time wakings — and better rest for your child and for you! Sleep systems can also reduce the caregiver load. We understand that caring for a child with complex needs can be physically and emotionally exhausting, especially overnight. A sleep system can make a big difference by reducing the need to reposition your child throughout the night, helping your child settle more easily, and giving you peace of mind that they are safe and supported.

Would My Child Benefit From a Sleep System?

Your child may benefit from a sleep system if they:

  • Struggle to change position in bed
  • Have tight muscles or joint stiffness
  • Use a wheelchair for much of the day
  • Are at risk of hip or spinal problems, such as hip subluxation or curvature of the spine.

Your Physical therapist or Occupational Therapist can help assess whether a sleep system is right for your child and guide you through the process. Sleep systems are individualised, and as therapists, we look at:

  • How your child currently sleeps
  • Their posture, comfort, and mobility
  • Any existing joint or muscle issues
  • Their 24-hour posture
  • Their overall health and therapy goals

Getting Started with a Sleep System: What to Expect

Once a system is selected, you’ll be taught how to set it up, and we will be here to adjust it as needed and check that it’s working well over time, especially with growth! And remember, sleep systems may not be successful right away and will often need time to adjust to. This is where a lot of parents give up, but persistence is key. Sleep systems are an integral part of your child’s 24-hour postural management. If something isn’t working, please speak to your therapist, and we will reassess and tailor the system as necessary.

Need Advice?

If you’re concerned about your child’s sleep or posture at night, please don’t hesitate to speak with your Physical therapist or Occupational Therapist. Small changes can have a big impact, and every child deserves a safe, restful sleep that will nurture their growth. If you’d like to talk to a therapist about whether a sleep system might help your child, reach out to your therapy team, we’re here to help.
